As of 6th April 2016 if became law for all dogs in England to be microchipped and for the registered owners details to be kept up to date. Owners could face a £500 if their dog is not chipped!
How would you feel if your pet went missing? Even the best trained and well cared for animals can escape or get lost. They can run to escape from loud or strange noises, wander off through a door accidentally left open by visitors or children, wander into a building or even a vehicle through an open door, get distracted and separated from their owners whilst out walking, or even be stolen, there are endless possibilities. Would your pet always be wearing their collar with a tag and could you be certain that they would still be wearing it if your pet was found?
Microchipping is a simple procedure that can be done during an appointment with a veterinary nurse. It involves implanting a small ‘chip’, approximately the size of a grain of rice, under the skin which will remain there for life. The chip has a unique identification number which is registered to a central database. If the pet becomes lost and is taken to a veterinary surgery, animal re-homing centre or handed in to the dog warden, it can be scanned and your contact details obtained from a secure central database, which means you can be contacted and re united with your pet.
